MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- Georgia College &
State's Shaun Keaton scored a game-high 23 points to lead the
No. 24 Bobcats to a 79-76 Peach Belt Conference win over No. 7
Augusta State Saturday in the Centennial Center.
The Bobcats' win – their sixth straight –
improved them to 15-2 overall and to a league-best 9-2 in the PBC.
With the loss, ASU slipped to 14-4 and 8-3, respectively. The
victory snapped a string of five straight losses to ASU.
The contest, which featured 17 leads changes and 10 ties, marked
the fifth top-25 matchup of the season for the Jags. ASU is now
14-7 all-time against nationally-ranked foes under fifth-year head
coach Dip Metress.
Senior center Garret Siler posted a team-high 18 points and
seven rebounds and added three blocks. Ben Madgen netted 16 points
and Daniel Dixon turned in 13 points off the bench. Senior point
guard Steve Smith handed out five assists.
The Bobcats got 12 points from Ken Kemp and Graham Martin and Tye
Rowland added 10 points each.
After an ASU turnover, Rowland hit two free throws with 11.8
seconds left for a 79-76 GCSU lead. The Jags raced the ball up the
floor and Madgen's game-tying attempt from the right wing was
short.
ASU led 63-59 after a Daniel Dixon 3-pointer at the 8:36 mark and a
pair of Siler free throws gave the Jags a 65-59 advantage before
Rowland keyed a 7-0 spurt with a trey and added a reverse layup.
Two Keaton free throws gave GCSU a 66-65 lead at the 6:21 mark. A
Keaton jumper tied the game at 70-all with 3:18 to play after
Dixon's two from the charity stripe put ASU in front.
A Caleb Brown tip in off a Dixon missed 3-pointer put the Jags up
74-72 before Keaton answered with a long-range bomb from the left
wing for a 75-74 Bobcat lead with 1:55 left.
A Keaton jumper put the hosts ahead 77-74 at the 1:00 mark and
Siler's layup made it a 77-76 game with 40.6 seconds
left.
A Kemp 3-pointer as the first half expired gave the Bobcats a 41-39
halftime lead, just the fourth team this season the Jags have
trailed at intermission.
ASU travels to Columbus State on Monday, Feb. 2 for a 7:30 p.m.,
PBC matchup in CSU's Lumpkin Center.
