AUGUSTA, Ga.
– Augusta State used a 19-6 run over the final six minutes
Saturday afternoon to pull away from Emmanuel College and post a
90-70 non-conference victory in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
With the victory, the Jaguars improved to 9-0 on the season and
established a new mark for the best start in program history. The
win extended ASU's home winning streak to 19 straight overall
and to 16 straight at home in the regular season. The win also
marked the 18th consecutive regular-season win for the Jags, who
set a season-high for points scored.
ASU senior forward Alex Smith booked a career-high 28 points, while
Ben Madgen and Fred Brathwaite tallied 20 and 19 points,
respectively, Senior Daniel Dixon pitched in 13 points, six assists
and four steals off the bench.
"We've got five seniors this year and they are key to
the team," said ASU head coach Dip Metress. "It's
their team -- they're the leaders and the young guys, they
follow the great lead of the seniors. It's a great feeling to
have guys like this. It's really great to go into the break
with a great start. It was a great win today and a great honor to
be their coach. We've had a tough schedule but it's
great to be 9-0."
With his 20-point effort, Madgen bypassed former two-time Jaguar
All-American AJ Bowman for second place on both the ASU and Peach
Belt Conference's career scoring lists. He now stands 31
points shy of the all-time league scoring mark and 63 points off
the school scoring record.
Tedrick Hudson led Emmanuel (11-3) with 21 points, Ben Brim turned
in 19 and Graham Maxwell chipped in 11. The NAIA-affiliated Lions
are the defending national champions of the NCCAA (National
Christian College Athletic Association).
ASU led by as many as 13 in the first half and owned a 44-35
advantage at the half. The Jags pushed their lead to as much as 17
on a pair of Dixon free throws with 14:36 left to play.
Emmanuel gradually chipped away at its deficit, pulling to within
seven on a Brim 3-pointer at the 6:09 mark. The Jags countered with
a 9-0 run over a span of 2:41. After a Maxwell jumper, ASU rattled
off an 8-0 spurt in 47 seconds for a 22-point lead with 2:21
left.
The Jags, who shot 54 percent from the field, outscored the Lions
42-12 in the paint and went 35-of-44 from the charity stripe.
After an 11-day break for the holidays, ASU will host
Conference-Carolina foe Mount Olive on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 4:00
p.m., in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
