SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Ninth-ranked Augusta State
connected on seven of eight free throws in the final 2:23 Saturday
to earn a 59-55 Peach Belt Conference road win over No. 20
Armstrong Atlantic State in Alumni Arena.
With the win – their fifth straight – the Jaguars
improved to 19-4 overall and 13-3 in the PBC and maintained their
half-game lead over USC Aiken in the league standings. The Pirates
slipped to 18-5 and 11-5, respectively. The victory was the sixth
straight in the series for ASU.
The contest, which included seven ties and five lead changes,
marked the sixth top-25 matchup of the season for the Jags. ASU is
now 15-7 all-time against nationally-ranked foes under fifth-year
head coach Dip Metress.
Senior center Garret Siler booked his sixth double-double of the
season, scoring a team-high 17 points and grabbing a career-high 18
rebounds to go along with four blocks. Junior guard Ben Madgen
managed 15 points and seven rebounds while junior forward Fred
Brathwaite logged 14 points and nine rebounds.
Calvin Wilson scored a game-high 22 points and netted 12 rebounds
and three steals, but was the only Pirate to reach double
figures.
The Jags won the rebounding edge 52-41 and overcame a 30.0 percent
shooting effort, their lowest of the season. ASU shook off a slow
start, scoring just five points in the first 15 minutes, as the
Pirates moved out to a 15-5 lead with 5:08 left in the first half,
and took a 22-17 lead into halftime.
The 17 points marked a season-low, first-half point total for ASU,
which misfired on its first 17 shots from the field.
Armstrong led for the game's first 30 minutes until the Jags
got a pair of Madgen free throws to take their first lead of the
game, 43-41, at the 10:30 mark. AASU moved back in front -- 54-53
-- on a Keron McKenzie driving layup with 2:01 left, but suffered
two turnovers and missed three shots in the final minute and a
half.
Madgen again put the Jags in front at 55-54 with a pair of free
throws with 1:43 left and junior guard Daniel Dixon drained four
free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal the win.
The loss halted AASU's three-game win streak, while Augusta State
stretched its current win streak to five. AASU falls to 1-4 this
season against nationally-ranked teams - all teams within the Peach
Belt Conference.
ASU heads to Florence, S.C., to take on PBC foe Francis Marion on
Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Smith Center.
