AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State junior forward
Fred Brathwaite scored a career-high 25 points to propel the
11th-ranked Jaguars past Clayton State 69-63 Saturday night in
Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The victory improved ASU to 17-4 overall and to 11-3 in the Peach
Belt Conference, while the Lakers dropped to 12-9 overall and 5-9
in the league. The win avenged a 65-55 loss at Clayton State on
Jan. 3. The contest marked the ninth matchup between the two teams
in the last two-plus seasons.
ASU junior guard Ben Madgen tallied 23 points, including five
3-pointers, and senior center Garret Siler booked 12 points and two
blocks.
Senior guard Bernard Fields paced the Lakers with 15 points and
Freddie Williams chipped in 10.
The Jaguars matched their season high with 10 3-pointers made and
suffered only 11 turnovers.
Clayton State led 33-31 at the half and pushed its lead to eight
with 11:03 remaining in the game. Braithwaite scored 11 straight
points, first on a jumper and then on back-to-back treys to pull
the Jags even at 48-all with 9:29 to play.
After Eric Wilson's two free throws put the Lakers up 50-48,
Brathwaite answered with a baseline drive and thunderous dunk off a
feed from Tye Beal. He completed the 3-point play when he drained
the free throw, giving the Jags a 51-50 lead with 8:53 to go.
Jonathan Austin canned a trey on the Lakers' next possession
before Siler threw down a dunk off an assist from Brathwaite to tie
the game at 53-all with 8:16 left.
Madgen hit two free throws after a technical on Clayton head coach
Gordon Gibbons and a then drilled a trey for a 60-53 ASU lead.
The Lakers rallied back, pulling even at the 2:30 mark after a pair
of Freddie Williams' free throws. Daniel Dixon drilled a
17-foot jumper and after a Siler free throw, Madgen canned a trey
with 35 seconds to play to put the Jags up 66-60.
ASU hosts Lander on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in
Christenberry Fieldhouse.
