CHARLOTTE, N.C. -
Augusta State swept a non-conference doubleheader from Queens
Tuesday afternoon at Park Road Park.
With the victories, the Jaguars improved to 24-15 overall while the
Royals dropped to 13-16.
ASU rallied for wins in extra innings of both games. The Jags
scratched for two runs in the top of the 11th for a 5-4 win in the
first game, then plated two runs in the top of the eighth in the
nightcap for a 6-4 victory.
In the opener, freshman righthander Sara DeMuth (8-6) came on in
relief of starter Jen Miller with two outs in the third inning. She
worked the last 8.1 innings, striking out 10 without a walk and
allowing only four hits and two runs. Miller allowed four hits and
two runs with a strikeout and three walks over the first 2.2
innings.
Senior Angii Verbeelen and freshmen Kacee Camp and Kristen Jones
logged two hits each. ASU outhit the Royals 10-8.
In the nightcap, DeMuth earned her second win of the day, yielding
just one hit in two innings of scoreless relief. Freshman Emily
Corish worked the first 4.0 innings, surrendering six hits and two
runs with a strikeout. Junior Kimberly Kennedy went 2.0 innings,
giving up four hits and two runs while striking out three.
ASU's Jones slapped a two-run homer with one out in the
eighth inning to break a 4-all tie. Camp and Jones added two more
hits and Jones booked four RBI while Camp scored a pair of runs.
The two teams combined for 22 hits.
The Jags host Senior Day on Saturday, April 4 at 2:00 p.m., when
they take on Armstrong Atlantic State in a Peach Belt Conference
doubleheader at Jaguar Field.
