AUGUSTA, Ga.
– UNC Pembroke defeated Augusta State 5-3 in game one of
Saturday's Peach Belt doubleheader, but could not complete
the sweep in the nightcap as the Jaguars took a 7-2 win to earn the
split
In game one, Senior Chris Tyler (1-1) received the loss giving up
seven hits, but only recorded only two earned runs and booked four
strikeouts. Senior Jorge Virguez and sophomore Tristan Toorie paced
the Jags going 2-for-4, with Virguez slapping in an RBI. Seniors
Tim Rawlings and Kevin Owens, junior Shannon Wilkerson and
sophomores Alex Walker and Alex Sickman all had a safety, with
Rawlings and Sickman each adding an RBI.
Augusta State bounced back in game two and combined for 10 hits.
Sophomore Scott Strickland improved to 3-0 on the season earning
the win. Strickland two runs on eight hits and had three
strikeouts, before sophomore Patrick Lowe came in for relief in the
ninth.
Senior Tim Rawlings paced the Jags offensively in game two with
three hits and three RBI. Freshman Dwight Ashe knocked out his
first collegiate homerun and was 2-for-4 in game two with two RBI.
Wilkerson added a pair of safeties, while Owens, Toorie, Virguez,
and junior Tony Baker each had a hit.
The two teams close out the three-game series Sunday afternoon.
First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
