FLORENCE, S.C. -
In double elimination play, Augusta State topped Armstrong Atlantic
State 2-1 in nine innings on Friday morning in day one of the Peach
Belt Conference Tournament Freedom Florence Park in Florence,
S.C.
With the win, the Jaguars improved to 31-17 overall, while the loss
dropped Armstrong Atlantic State to 23-22 on the season.
The score remained scoreless until the fourth when Augusta
State's Sara DeMuth singled to right field scoring Kacee Camp
to make the score 1-0. The Lady Pirates would then tie the game
1-all with Casey Saunders scoring on a wild pitch from DeMuth.
The score would remain 1-all until the top of the ninth, when Camp
would score on a single up the middle from Kristen Jones to win the
game 2-1.
Freshman Emily Corish (5-1) earned the win and pitched 7.0 innings.
Corish allowed only four hits and booked six strikeouts. Freshman
Sara DeMuth relieved Corish in the fifth and allowed one run on two
hits and had two strikeouts. Corish would return to finish the game
in the seventh.
Freshman Kristen Jones paced The Lady Jags offensively going
2-for-4 and had an RBI. Freshman Kacee Camp was 2-for-4 on the day,
while Sara DeMuth had a hit and an RBI. Senior Angii Verbeelen and
junior Kayla Hicks each had a safety on the day.
With the win, The Lady Jags will move on into the winner's
bracket tomorrow, April 18, to face the North Georgia Lady Saints
and play their second game of the PBC tournament at 11:00 a.m.
