Pirates Top ASU, 8-4

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Armstrong Atlantic State built a 6-0 lead over the first four innings and held on for an 8-4 Peach Belt Conference victory over Augusta State Saturday afternoon at Pirate Field.

With the loss, Augusta State dropped to 22-28 overall and 8-14 in the PBC while the Pirates (33-16, 11-11 PBC) captured their sixth straight contest.

Armstrong got on the board in the second inning on a squeeze bunt by Josh Wilson and two-out, RBI-single by Juan Dorado.

The Pirates added three runs in the third to push their lead to 5-0, taking advantage of a Jaguar throwing error with the bases loaded. A solo homer in the fourth staked AASU to a 6-0 lead.

The Jaguars answered back with three runs in the top of the fifth, chasing AASU starter Jeff Chase. Tristan Toorie and Alex Walker each delivered RBI-singles in the inning, cutting the lead to 6-3.

In the bottom of the inning, Wilson delivered an RBI-single to center that signaled the end of the afternoon for ASU starter Chris Tyler (4-3).

The Jags got the run back in the seventh on back-to-back doubles by Toorie and Kevin Owens, but the Pirates finished off the scoring in the eighth inning on Carlos Cardoza-Oquendo's infield RBI single.

Blake Culberson (5-2) picked up the win in relief for the Pirates and Ryan Smith picked up his seventh save. Tyler took the loss for the Jaguars, giving up 10 hits and seven runs -- four earned -- in 4.1 innings, walking three and striking out two.

Torrie went 3-for-3 to pace ASU and scored a pair of runs while Jorge Virguez went 2-for-5. Justin Harris had three hits for the Pirates, while Michael Price and Juan Dorado collected two hits apiece.
