AUGUSTA, Ga. – Armstrong Atlantic State
built a 6-0 lead over the first four innings and held on for an 8-4
Peach Belt Conference victory over Augusta State Saturday afternoon
at Pirate Field.
With the loss, Augusta State
dropped to 22-28 overall and 8-14 in the PBC while the Pirates
(33-16, 11-11 PBC) captured their sixth straight contest.
Armstrong got on the board in the second inning on a squeeze bunt
by Josh Wilson and two-out, RBI-single by Juan Dorado.
The Pirates added three runs in the
third to push their lead to 5-0, taking advantage of a Jaguar
throwing error with the bases loaded. A solo homer in the fourth
staked AASU to a 6-0 lead.
The Jaguars answered back with
three runs in the top of the fifth, chasing AASU starter Jeff
Chase. Tristan Toorie and Alex Walker each delivered RBI-singles in
the inning, cutting the lead to 6-3.
In the bottom of the inning, Wilson
delivered an RBI-single to center that signaled the end of the
afternoon for ASU starter Chris Tyler (4-3).
The Jags got the run back in the
seventh on back-to-back doubles by Toorie and Kevin Owens, but the
Pirates finished off the scoring in the eighth inning on Carlos
Cardoza-Oquendo's infield RBI single.
Blake Culberson (5-2) picked up the
win in relief for the Pirates and Ryan Smith picked up his seventh
save. Tyler took the loss for the Jaguars, giving up 10 hits and
seven runs -- four earned -- in 4.1 innings, walking three and
striking out two.
Torrie went 3-for-3 to pace ASU and
scored a pair of runs while Jorge Virguez went 2-for-5. Justin
Harris had three hits for the Pirates, while Michael Price and Juan
Dorado collected two hits apiece.
The two teams will wrap up their Peach Belt Conference series with
a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday at Pirate Field.
