AUGUSTA, Ga.
– Augusta State split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader
with Armstrong Atlantic State Sunday afternoon at Pirate Field.
After Armstrong's Cody Walden
became the first 10-game winner in the PBC this season in a 7-2 win
over ASU in game one, the Jaguars rebounded with an 8-5 win in game
two.
The Pirates saw their record drop
to 34-17 and 12-12 in the PBC while ASU improved to 23-29 overall
and 9-15 in the conference.
AASU staked Walden (10-1) to a 6-0
lead over the first three innings. The Jags loaded the bases with
nobody out in the sixth, but Walden induced a 5-4-3, inning-ending
double play to limit ASU to only two runs.
ASU sophomore righty Patrick Lowe
(3-5) took the loss, giving up six hits and five runs in 2 2/3
innings, striking out two.
In game two, the Jags scored in
each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead before the Pirates
battled back with three runs in their half of the second.
ASU moved back in front with two
runs in the third after junior Evan Smith drove home Shannon
Wilkerson with a two-out, RBI-single that put the Jags ahead for
good, 4-3. Sophomore catcher Alex Sickman drilled a two-run homer
in the sixth to pad the ASU lead.
Freshman righthander Chase Johnston
(3-2) hurled six innings of two-run relief to pick up the win for
the Jags. Senior lefty Ben Dukes worked the first three innings,
allowing four hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts and six
walks.
Senior leftfielder Tim Rawlings had
five hits -- including a triple -- to pace ASU offensively. Tristan
Toorie and Rawlings had a pair of hits in game one while Rawlings
had three hits and Sickman tallied three RBI. Wilkerson and Kevin
Owens recorded two hits each and Rawlings and Wilkerson scored two
runs each.
The Jags wrap up their regular-season schedule next weekend when
they travel to Milledgeville, Ga., to take on Georgia College &
State in a three-game, PBC series.
