COLUMBUS, Ga. -
12th ranked Augusta State stayed undefeated in Peach Belt
Conference play on Sunday with a double header sweep of Columbus
State. ASU won game one 3-0 and took the nightcap 9-4.
ASU hurler Sara DeMuth tossed a five-hit shutout in the opener with
14 strikeouts to lead the Jaguars to the win. She walked just one
in the gem. CSU's Branigan Wix was the only Cougar player with two
hits in the contest.
The Jaguars got all of their offense in the second inning. Kristen Jones led off with a walk and, after a sacrifice, came home on a
Kacee Camp double. Kayla Hicks then followed with a two-run homer
to right-center for a 3-0 lead.
Freshman Kelsey Gilliam took the loss for CSU, allowing four hits
and the three runs in four innings of work.
Augusta broke open a tight game with five seventh-inning runs in
game two. ASU had taken a 2-0 lead in the second on two hits and an
error, and then extended the lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth.
Kacey Sims doubled home a run and Kacee Camp squeezed her in to
give the Jaguars a four-run cushion.
CSU cut the margin in half in the bottom of the fifth. Carrie Jones
and Rocky Hemmer each had infield singles to score a run and make
it 4-2. That set up the seventh when the wheels came off for CSU.
ASU put together six hits and took advantage of an error to build a
9-2 lead.
Brittany Leverett smacked a solo homer to right in the bottom of
the seventh for CSU, and the Cougars got another run when Kori
Waugh singled home Jones. Lauren Reader's groundout ended the game
with two runners aboard.
CSU, now 9-16-1 overall and 0-4 in PBC play, hosts Albany State on
Monday at 5 p.m. at the CSU Softball Field. ASU (22-6, 8-0) plays
at West Georgia on Tuesday.
