CARROLLTON, Ga. -
The No. 12 Augusta State softball team swept West Georgia 2-0 and
7-2 in a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon at University
Field in Carrollton, Ga.
ASU starter Sara DeMuth kept the UWG bats off balance throughout
the course of the first game, allowing no hits. DeMuth threw her
first no-hitter of the season and improved to 10-2 overall. DeMuth
had seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.
In game two, Emily Corish received the win and moved to 8-3 on the
season. Corish allowed one run on one hit and struck out two
batters. Kimberly Kennedy relieved Corish in the sixth and gave up
one run on three hits in 2.0 innings of work.
In the second game, one big inning from the Jaguars proved to be
the difference in the game.
In the top of the second, ASU collected three hits and induced a
pair of walks and a fielder's choice to get runners on. Kayla Hicks
and Jessica Thornton did the rest, as each homered in the inning,
Hicks with a two-run shot and Thornton with a grand slam. When the
dust settled, the Jaguars had scored seven runs.
West Georgia's runs came on a Megan Garcia homer in the second and
when Kristin Hall reached on a fielder's choice with the bases
loaded in the bottom of the seventh. Garcia was 2-for-3 in the game
with an RBI and a run scored.
Jessica Thornton paced the Jags offensively on the day with two
hits and four RBI. Kayla Hicks had three hits on the day with two
RBI, while Leann Barbers, Kristen Jones and Kacee Camp each had two
hits on the afternoon. Alysha Krier and Laura Brown each had a hit
on the afternoon.
