GREENWOOD, S.C. -
No. 10 Augusta State split with Lander in a Peach Belt Conference
doubleheader on Tuesday at Doug Spears Field in Greenwood, S.C. The
Jaguars took game one 5-3 in eight innings, while the Bearcats took
game two 2-0.
Augusta State is now 33-11 on the season and 12-4 in the league,
while Lander moves to 16-18 overall and 4-8 in the PBC
Augusta State's Leann Barber got the lead off hit in the
first inning and Leissner and the Bearcat defense shut down the
Jaguars the remainder of the evening.
Leissner (11-4) struck out seven and walked two.
ASU's Emily Corish (12-5) suffered the loss as she walked two
and allowed two earned runs on two hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
Lander scored the lone two runs of the game in the first inning as
a result of a series of illegal pitches by Corish. Brittney
Sheriff, who reached first on an illegal pitch, advanced to third
on two more illegal pitches and scored on Marilyn Newman's
RBI single. Daisy Stewart followed with an RBI single that scored
Ashley Proctor.
Newman went 2-for-3 for the Bearcats.
In the first game, ASU's Sara Demuth broke a 3-3 tie with the
game-winning hit in the eighth inning when her RBI single sent
Jessica Thornton home. ASU made it 5-3 on Kacee Camps' RBI
single.
ASU's Kimberly Kennedy earned the win as she struck out one
and allowed no hits in 2.2 innings pitched.
Leissner took the loss, striking out one and allowing two earned
runs on four hits in two innings pitched.
Augusta State took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Barber and
Laura Brown scored on Lander errors, then the Jaguars stretched the
margin to 3-0 in the sixth on Kristen Jones' solo home run
over the left field fence.
Lander tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth when Proctor's RBI
double plated Casey Corbitt and Natalie Smith's RBI double
scored Sheriff and Proctor.
For Augusta State, Kasey Sims and Camp both went 2-for-4 and Jones
batted 2-for-3.
The Jaguars are back in action on Friday, April 2 for Senior Day,
when they host Flagler for a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at
Jaguar Field. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
