AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State completed a sweep
of its three-game homestand Saturday afternoon with a 67-48 Peach
Belt Conference win over Columbus State in Christenberry
Fieldhouse.
With the win, the third-ranked Jaguars extended their home
winning streak to 41 games and their PBC home winning streak to 29
in a row. Prior to the game, the 2009-10 Jaguar squad was presented
with its 2010 Elite Eight rings and three new banners were unveiled
in the CFH rafters.
The victory lifted the Jags to 19-1 on the season and 9-1 in the
league. The Cougars slipped to 8-10 and 4-5 in the conference. ASU
matched the best start in school history through 20 games,
originally set during the 1969-70 season. The 48 points allowed by
the Jags marked a season low for an opponent in conference
play.
Senior forward Franck Ndongo
booked a game-high 22 points on 9-of-11 from the field and 3-3 from
the line, along with pulling down a game-high eight rebounds.
Junior point guard O'Neal
Armstrong scored 13 points and handed out a game-high seven
assists while grabbing four rebounds. Senior guard George
Johnson, the squad's leading scorer at 16.2 ppg., scored just
seven points on 2-of-10 shooting but netted five rebounds, three
assists and three steals.
"This was a big win for us because we had a plan at the
beginning of the week and we were able to get that done," said ASU
head coach Dip Metress. "I'm glad we got our three wins. We got
this one done today with total teamwork."
The Jags, who entered the contest leading the nation in
free-throw percentage, hit 14-of-15 from the charity stripe (93.3
percent).
Junior guards Isaac Joyner and Steve Peterson led the Cougars
with nine points each. Peterson grabbed a team-high seven
rebounds.
The Jags took control early, jumping out 16-5 in the first 5:29
of the game and led by as much as 23 en route to a 37-14 halftime
lead. ASU set a new season low in scoring defense by holding
the Cougars to 14 points in the first half. Ndongo was 5-of-5 from
the field in the first half en route to 11 points.
Columbus State inched within 16 on an Isaac Joyner layup at the
10:16 mark of the second half but could get no closer. The Jags
held Columbus State to just 36.4 percent shooting for the game, and
only 20 percent from behind the arc.
ASU shot 48 percent for the game (24-of-50) and outrebounded the
Cougars 39-26.
ASU returns to action on Wednesday night, February 2 when the
travel to USC-Aiken for a 7:30 p.m., matchup before returning home
to host Lander on Saturday afternoon, Feb 5 and UNC Pembroke on
Monday, Feb. 7.
