AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State swept a non-conference doubleheader from West Georgia Sunday afternoon with 4-3 and 4-0 victories at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
With the pair of wins, the Jaguars (6-6) completed the series sweep of UWG and pulled to .500 on young season.
ASU sophomore shortstop Jake Sutton went 3-for-3 in game one drove in two runs. Jeff Rice had two hits and Andy Onufrak and Alex Walker each hand an RBI.
Sophomore righthander Scott Shipman (1-1) registered his first win of the season, working 8.0 innings with four strikeouts and a walk. He allowed eight hits and two earned runs. Junior righty Wilson Taylor notched his third save with a perfect ninth inning.
Stuart Drew went 3-for-5 for the Wolves (4-6) and Andy Marinelli added a pair of safeties. Jammie Sexton took the loss, yielding seven hits and four earned runs in 8.0 innings with four strikeouts and five walks.
In game two, five ASU pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout, allowing only one walk. Junior leftfielder Caleb Saggus drove in a pair of runs and Matt Smith scored two runs.
Sophomore righty Zach Breaux (1-1) earned his first win with an inning of relief. Taylor got the starting nod in game two and worked the first two innings, followed by 2.0 innings from Rob Crosby. Breaux, Matt Blume and Clint Echols each worked an inning of relief.
The Jags travel to Due West, S.C., to take on Erskine on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 2:30 p.m.
