AIKEN, S.C. -- The Augusta State Jaguars opened their 2011 season in successful fashion over the weekend, posting a 3-0 record at the Aiken Early Bird Tournament.
ASU edged Barton 6-5 in the season opener Saturday afternoon, and blanked Charleston (W. Va.) 13-0 behind junior hurler Emily Headrick's no-hitter.
On Sunday afternoon, the Jags defeated Chowan 5-2 with sophomore Laura Brown earning the win. Juniors Jessica Thorton and Kacee Camp lead the team offensively with a combined 15 hits on the weekend.
Junior pitcher Heather Hughes tallied the first win of the season for the Jags, with Headrick earning the save.
Junior Jessica Thorton paced the Jags offensively in game one with two hits and three RBI. Senior Alyssa Pingree and juniors Kacee Camp, Destiny Echols and Kaitlin Harris had one hit each.
In the win over Charleston (W. Va.), the Jags jacked five home runs including two from Jones. Camp, Alyssa Pingree and Thornton each added homers. Thornton went 4-for-4 and Echols added two hits.
Thornton homered again Sunday and went 2-for-4 against Chowan. Pingree and Echols booked two hits each, including a triple from Echols.
The Jags will be back in action Tuesday, Feb. 15, traveling to Hickory, N.C., to take on Lenoir-Rhyne at 2:00 p.m.
