AUGUSTA, Ga. –Augusta State split with Wingate University Saturday, March 12, in a non-conference doubleheader at Jaguar Field. Wingate University won the first game 5-1. ASU took game two 3-0.
Wingate University jumped on the Jaguars early, scoring five runs in the first two innings off junior starter Heather Hughes (5-3).
ASU Junior Jessica Thorton had three hits in game one, including a solo homerun to plate the only run for the Jags, while junior Kaitlin Harris contributed one hit.
ASU bounced back for game two, defeating the Bulldogs 3-0. Junior Emily Headrick earned the win.
Both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Jags bats came alive. The three run rally started with a double by junior Destiny Echols and then three back-to-back singles. Senior Kacey Sims and juniors Kaitlin Harris and Kacee Camp each had an RBI.
The Jags hit the road on March 17 to take on Georgia College and State University at 4:00 p.m. for a conference doubleheader in Milledgeville, Ga.
