AUGUSTA, Ga. -- USC Aiken's Derek Beasley and Joe Tart combined on a two-hit shutout Tuesday night as the Pacers shut down Augusta State for a 6-0 non-conference victory at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
USCA improved to 18-13 overall while the Jaguars dropped to 15-20 on the season.
Beasley (3-3), a freshman from Harlem, Ga., struck out five 8.0 innings while giving up just a pair of singles. After he allowed a leadoff walk in the ninth, Tart come on and got a strikeout and a groundout. ASU's Caleb Saggus singled to right, but Pacer rightfielder Teddy Leverett cut down the Jags' Tristan Toorie trying to go first to third on Saggus' base hit.
Freshman lefthander
Kip Custer (0-3) earned the start for ASU and surrendered five hits and three runs in 3.1 innings. Five Jags' relievers combined to allow just one earned run and six hits over the final 5.2 innings and struck out five.
Saggus had two of the three ASU hits.
Leverett went 2-for-6, while Josh Miller and JJ Loker were each 2-for-5. Leverett drove in two runs and Dylan Durham scored a pair of runs.
ASU travels to Montevallo for a three-game Peach Belt Conference weekend series. The Jags and Falcons meet in a single game Friday night at 8:00 p.m., and meet in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m., Saturday.
