Augusta, Ga. – Augusta State earned a Peach Belt Conference sweep Sunday afternoon against the Columbus State Cougars. The Jags took game one from the Cougars, 6-5 and game two 4-3, at Jaguar Field. Augusta State is now 29-15, 10-8 in the PBC.

ASU opened the day with a 6-5 victory over Columbus State. The Jaguars jumped to an early lead, scoring four runs in the first three innings. A homer in the first inning by junior Kristen Jones brought the Jaguars to a 2-0 lead.

The Cougars answered back in the third inning scoring two runs to tie the game. The Jaguars led off the bottom half of the inning with a single up the middle by sophomore Laura Brown. Brown would score off a single by junior Jessica Thorton. Jones added another RBI with a single to center field to score Thorton.

ASU had a 5-2 lead going into the fifth inning when the Cougars responded with three runs to tie up the game once more. ASU scored their final run in the bottom of the fifth when senior Kacey Sims reached first base after being hit by a pitch. A sac bunt by Thorton advanced Sims, before a double by junior Kacee Camp would score the final run to secure the 6-5 win over the Cougars.

Jones and Brown each had two hits for game one. Camp and Thorton each recorded one hit each.

In game two, the Jags led the game for six innings, scoring a run an inning for the first four innings. In the top of the seventh, the Cougars made one last attempt to get on the board.

A single to center by Keeley Kennedey started the inning followed by a walk. Morgan Staffins came to the plate next to slam a three-run homer to put the Cougars back in the game, however the Cougars were unable to score another run, securing the 4-3 PBC win for the Jaguars. Junior Emily Headrick (13-3) earned the win for ASU.

Senior Destiny Echols paced the Jags offensively with three hits in game two, with two RBI. Five additional Jags booked a hit each.

The Jaguars are back in action Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. to take on Lander at Jaguar Field.
