Pembroke, N.C. – The Augusta State Jaguars (25-11, 6-4 PBC) split a double header with the UNC Pembroke Braves (18-18, 6-8 PBC) in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at LRA Field.
In game one the Jaguars jumped to an early lead scoring one run in the first inning. The Jags held the 1-0 lead until the Braves scored two runs off three hits in the bottom of the 5th inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Braves were able to hold on to secure the 2-1 win. ASU junior Heather Hughes suffered the loss.
ASU bounced back in game two, defeating the Braves 2-1. The Jags again jumped in front early, scoring two runs in the first inning off of four hits. Echols led off with a single. After a sacrifice by senior Kacey Sims, three consecutive singles by Thornton, junior Kacee Camp and junior Kristen Jones plated the two runs.
The Braves held the Jags scoreless for the rest of the game, however this was all the offense the Jags needed. Junior pitcher Emily Headrick was able to hold off the Braves, allowing only one run in seven innings of work. Headrick scattered six hits throughout the game, with one strikeout and only one walk.
Echols, Thornton, Camp, Jones, and Senior Alyssa Pingree each had two hits on the day, while freshman Katelyn Rush contributed one hit.
