Augusta, Ga. – Augusta State split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon with USC Aiken. The Jags took game one from the Pacers, 1-0 in eight innings, while the Pacers topped the Jags 5-4 in 12 innings in game two at Jaguar Field. Augusta State is now 27-15, 8-8 in the PBC.
In game one the Jags and Pacers played a scoreless game into the bottom of the eighth inning. With two outs and the bases empty, sophomore Laura Brown hit a single to left field. Senior Destiny Echols followed with a double to deep left field, scoring Brown for the game winning run.
Junior Heather Hughes pitched eight strong innings, allowing just 3 hits, with 1 strike out and no walks.
In game two, the Pacers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Jags answered back with a run to tie the game after a lead off hit from Echols and an RBI single from junior Kristen Jones. The Pacers would score two more runs in the fourth inning and hold a 3-1 lead until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Jones slammed a three run homer to give the Jags a 4-3 lead. After the Pacers tied the game in the sixth, the teams took the 4-4 tie into inning 12, when the Pacers scored an unearned run. ASU was unable to score in the bottom of the inning, allowing Aiken to secure the win. Junior Heather Hughes suffered the loss.
Senior Destiny Echols led the Jags offensively with three hits, while junior Kristen Jones added two hits and four RBI. Junior Kacee Camp also had two hits for the Jags, while sophomore Brown, senior Alyssa Pingree, and junior Kaitlin Harris each contributed one hit.
The Jaguars are back in action to take on Columbus State for a PBC doubleheader at Jaguar Field on Sunday, April 10th. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
