MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - In a game dubbed "Battle of the Cats: Round Two" by the fans, Augusta State delivered for its cheering section Wednesday night with a 59-56 thriller against rival Georgia College that came down to the wire.
In foul trouble and heads-up against one of the top post players in the league, junior Travis keels knocked down a turnaround jumper over GC's Ryan Aquino with nine second left to put the Jags up one. On the next possession, freshman Devon Wright-Nelson swiped an entry pass into the post, setting up senior O'Neal Armstrong for a 1-and-1 opportunity at the charity stripe with six seconds to go.
The senior calmly drained both, and a Bobcat buzzer-beating three clanged off the back iron to seal the victory.
Freshman Devonte Thomas knocked down a career-high six 3-pointers to can 18 points to lead the Jags, consistently answering big shot for big shot throughout the course of the game. Wright-Nelson added 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while D'Angelo Boyce bombed three of his own from behind the arc for nine points.
Ryan Aquino led Georgia College with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Ryan Lively hit five treys to add 15.
For the game, ASU shot 44.7 percent from the field (21-of-47) and 10-of-20 from three. GC shot 17-of-49 (34.7 percent) and 8-of-23 from deep (34.8 percent), but went 14-of-22 from the charity stripe.
But the Bobcats missed the front end of three 1-and-1 opportunities down the stretch, allowing the Jags an chance for the win as they answered with a 6-of-6 effort from the line in the second half.
