Pirates End ASU Home Streak

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Armstrong Atlantic State took down Augusta State 73-62 in Peach Belt Conference action at Christenberry Fieldhouse Wednesday night, ending a 41-game home winning streak that spanned three seasons.

The loss also snapped the Jaguars' PBC home winning streak at 33 games, and dropped ASU to 5-6 on the season and 1-2 in the PBC. The victory moved the Pirates to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the PBC.

Armstrong started hot, grabbing a quick 14-4 lead and building and maintaining the 12-point margin through the first 13 minutes of the game. But then they went cold, and Devonte Thomas' jumper with 1:14 left in the first half knotted things up at 26 apiece.

The teams traded buckets at a fast pace to open the second period, and Devon Wright-Nelson's three-point play with 16:22 left in the game gave the Jags their first lead of the game at 40-39. But Armstrong steadily pulled away in the final 11 minutes as ASU went cold offensively.

The Jaguars were led by sophomore Harold Doby's game-high 20 points to go with seven rebounds and a game-high four steals. Thomas booked 19 points, including a 9-of-10 effort from the charity stripe, and Wright-Nelson notched 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds, including ASU's only 10 points in an eight-minute stretch late in the second half.

The Pirates had four players in double figures, led by guard Chris Vanlandingham's 18 points and J.C. Winn's team-high eight rebounds.

ASU shot a season-low 30.5 percent for the game, going 18-of-59 from the floor and hitting on just 4-of 25 (16.0 percent) 3-pointers. The Pirates shot 43.4 percent on 23-of-53 shooting, hitting 7-of-19 (36.8 percent) from behind the arc.

The Jags play host to North Georgia on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
