HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Augusta State got off to a rough start in the Charger Chillout hosted by Alabama-Huntsville, falling 5-3 to Missouri-St.Louis in extra innings before dropping a 2-0 game to Barry on Friday.
In the first game, ASU fell behind 3-0 after the fifth as the Tritons used a three-run homer to left to take the lead.
The Jags put a run on the board in the sixth on Hannah Vaughn's sacrifice fly to bring Lauren Yeargan home to cut the lead to two and set up a wild finish.
Down to their last out in the bottom of the seventh, Macy Terry doubled through the ride side, and Yeargan sent a bomb to deep left to knot things up at three apiece and send it to extras.
USML responded, getting a run off an RBI groundout, but the Jags had runners at second and third with one out. A fly ball to left sent Laura Brown home, but the throw beat her to the plate and secured the victory for the Tritons.
Brown tossed a complete game, sprinkling five hits over the eight innings, but took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year.
In game two, ASU struggled to find any offense, managing just three hits in the game, two by Kacee Camp. Barry, ranked No. 36 nationally, used two doubles in the fourth to take the lead, and tacked on another in the sixth on a solo shot to right for the winning margin.
Emily Headrick threw six solid innings, giving up just two runs on five hits, but fell to 3-1 on the year.
The Jaguars return to the diamond tomorrow for day two of the Charger Chillout, taking on 11th-ranked Rollins at 2:30 p.m before playing Delta State at 4:30 p.m.
