GREENWOOD, S.C. – Augusta State earned their first conference win of the year, taking game one of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader 13-3 over Lander before falling 11-1 in game two.

The Jaguars (6-8, 1-4 PBC) scored one in the first, four in the third and sixth innings, one in the seventh, and three in the ninth as they maintained the attach throughout the game.

ASU strung together four hits sandwiched around a Bearcat error to propel the four-run third, highlighted by Justin Appel's two-out, two RBI double brought Matt Smith and Clay Tucker home to put the Jags up five early.

Eight Augusta State players scored, led by Smith's three; Appel, Ross Miles, and Justin Thigpen each crossed the plate twice. Four Jaguars also had two RBI apiece: Caleb Saggus, Kevin Dodson, Appel, and Thigpen.

The team racked up 14 hits to make things easy for Scott Shipman (1-2), who threw five shutout innings for the win while striking out five. Wilson Taylor tossed three innings for his first save of the season.

In the nightcap, Lander used a six-run eight innings to pull away and seal the split, batting around and notching five hits as a team.

Matt Smith led ASU overall on the day, going a combined 4-for-9 with three runs scored.

The Jags and Bearcats return to the diamond in the rubber game Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
