AUGUSTA, Ga. – A pitcher's duel turned ugly for Augusta State (8-16, 1-11 PBC) as Francis Marion put two runs on the board in the sixth and four in the seventh to take an 7-2 victory in game one, then piled on the runs in game two for a Peach Belt Conference series sweep Sunday.
Josh Barks went toe-to-toe with Spencer Jordan for five innings, giving up an unearned run in the second inning as the Patriots (15-9, 7-5 PBC) kept putting balls in play, but couldn't get on base.
But things changed in the sixth, as an error, failed fielder's choice, bunt single, and a single to left brought two runs in to build FMU's lead to three, and they piled on four more in the seventh to pull away.
The Jags got two runs in the eighth: Caleb Saggus tripled to right center field. Seth Foster walked, advanced to second, and Brac Barton drove both home with a two-RBI single to right.
Barks (2-4) took the loss for the Jags, going six innings and giving up six runs (three earned). He struck out one and walked one.
Jordan (4-1) confounded the Jags for seven innings, striking out nine and failing to walk a batter as he gave up just four hits.
Caleb Saggus led the Jags offensively, knocking three hits and scoring once in four at-bats, including a triple in the eighth inning.
In the second game, Francis Marion put six on the board in the first, three in the third, and never looked back en route to the win.
Seth Foster led the Jaguar attack, going 5-for-5 in game two with two RBI and 6-for-8 on the day, scoring once in the first game.
Brooke McAllister paced the Patriots with five RBI and two runs scored in a 4-for-10 day.
Matt Broderick got the win to move to 2-1 on the season, giving up three runs in five innings. Gary Ashcraft notched a four-inning save for his first. Scott Shipman (1-4) took the loss.
ASU returns to the diamond Thursday, March 15 at Lake Olmstead Stadium to host Anderson (S.C.) in a single non-conference game. First pitch is at 4:00 p.m.
