AUGUSTA, Ga. – Newberry got three walks to open the game and brought all three runners home en route to a 5-2 non-conference victory over Augusta State Tuesday at Jaguar Field.
With the bases full, Albert Baur hit an RBI groundout to second, and Josh McElwee knocked a two-out, two-RBI single back up the middle for a quick 3-0 margin for the Wolves.
Newberry got one more in the seventh on an RBI double and another in the eighth off a single to extend the lead to five.
Curtis Parker sent a two-out shot to deep left center in the bottom part of the eighth to pull ASU within three, but that was all the Jags could muster. It was Parker's third homer in the past four games.
Wesley Camp (1-2) went 7 2/3 innings for Newberry, allowing four hits and Parker's homer. Jeremy Long got his first save of the year, getting the final four outs.
Jamie Suggs (0-1) took the loss for the Jaguars.
Caleb Saggus, Preston Pye, Parker, and Bryson Stack all collected a hit in the ballgame, while Chase Johnston went five scoreless innings in relief, giving up three hits and striking out one.
Augusta State returns to the diamond Thursday, March 22 at Lake Olmstead Stadium as they host Armstrong Atlantic State in a single non-conference matchup beginning at 6:00 p.m.
