Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State dropped two non-conference games on Friday in the opening day of the Charger Chillout to tournament hosts Alabama Huntsville and #19 Barry University at Wilson Morgan Softball Complex in Decatur, Ala.
ASU (0-6) allowed two big innings, as the Chargers (5-4) offense took a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the second. ASU freshman starter Paige Deschaine (0-3) struck out two early, but three walks and a failed pickoff attempt from the catcher loaded the bases. UAH freshman Brianna Sullivan's single to left field scored two early. A walk and single scored another run and a double to left from junior Mary Kelley cleared the bases.
Five runs in the fourth gave the Chargers an 11-0 lead, but back-to-back doubles from freshman Casey Rowland and sophomore Brooke Stephens put ASU on the board. It was not enough for the comeback as the run rule took effect in the bottom of the fifth. UAH outhit the Jags 6-to-4 and took seven walks, handing out zero.
Deschaine struck out six in 3.2 innings of work, allowing five hits for 10 earned runs. Stephens went 1-for-2 with a solo RBI.
ASU freshman lefty Haley Birkle (0-3) started game two against #19 Barry (5-4), striking out five and giving up three hits for two runs in the 2-1 loss. The Buccaneers jumped to an early lead in the first inning when senior Sarah Broseker walked and sophomore Julie Brito doubled to right center.
The Bucs enjoyed a two-out rally in the bottom of the third, taking a 2-0 lead when freshman Megan Copeland bunted for a base hit and stole second. One batter later Broseker doubled to right center for the go-ahead run.
ASU got one back in the fourth off a single from Stephens that plated senior Lauren Yeargan, who led off the inning with a double. With a final chance in the seventh, the Jags left two runners on in the loss.
Barry's Camille Czarnecki went 4.0 innings in the win, giving up three hits for two runs. Freshman Taylor Sabol relieved her in the fifth, giving up two hits and striking out one.
Stephens had the only ASU RBI again, going 1-for-2 with a single, while Yeargan went 2-for-3 with a run.
The Jags take on North Alabama at 3:00 p.m. and University of Charleston at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16 for day two of the Charger Chillout.
