ASU Splits At Pioneer Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Augusta State rebounded from a 1-0 seventh-inning loss to West Georgia to hold Tusculum College scoreless on their own field for a 3-0 non-conference victory Saturday night at Red Edmonds Field.

ASU (2-10) took on tourney-hosts Tusculum (5-8) in game two with rookie slinger Kristen Mills (2-0) on the mound for the Jags. Mills went the 7.0 innings and fanned four while allowing four hits.

In the top of the third ASU freshman Kristen Bagley singled through the left side and senior Laura Brown dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance Bagley to second and bring up the top of the lineup. Sophomore Hannah Vaughn hit an infield single and stole second during the next at bat, where Molly Walton reached on an error from UWG's shortstop that scored Bagley and Vaughn – ASU up 2-0.

In their next at bat, the Pioneers put two runners on with no outs on a leadoff double and infield error. A sac bunt moved runners to second and third, but Mills clamped down to earn a lineout and her third strikeout of the night to get out of the inning.

ASU scored again in the fourth when Macy Terry led off with a single and Mills sacrificed her to second. Brooke Stephens followed with an RBI-double to left field for a 3-0 final lead. Stephens went 1-for-2 with an RBI while Vaughn and Terry each went 1-for-3 with a run.

It was a freshman pitcher's duel in the Jaguars' first game against West Georgia (4-4) with each team combining for eight hits and only one run.

ASU freshman Haley Birkle (0-5) gave up six hits for one run and struck out three in 6.2 innings of work. UWG's Megan Roberts (1-2) went all 7.0 innings to strike out five Jags and allow two hits. Scoreless through six, the Wolves' offense managed to get a run across with one out.

UWG junior Meagan Stover delivered a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the seventh. Birkle got the next batter to fly out to center field, but junior Danielle Combs doubled to right center to give the Wolves a 1-0 walk-off win.

The second and final day of the Pioneer Classic kicks off for the Jags tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. against Shepherd and concludes versus King at 12:00 p.m.
