Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta State Diamond Jaguars responded from a 5-4 seventh inning comeback loss to Young Harris, to prevail 4-2 in game two of the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Jaguar Field Sunday afternoon.
ASU (8-16, 2-2 PBC) gave freshman Kristen Mills early run support, when senior Laura Brown tripled to right center for two RBIs and a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Mills pitched 4.0 innings to allow three hits for three runs, before freshman Paige Deschaine relieved her in 3.0 innings for one hit and two runs. The Mountain Lions (18-8, 2-2) plated one in the third off a passed ball that scored Brittany Henry.
YHC took a 3-2 lead in the fourth when Henry homered to left field for two RBIs. ASU answered with two in the fifth when Lauren Yeargan laid down an RBI sacrifice bunt and Macy Terry drew a walk with the bases loaded. ASU up 4-3 in the top of the seventh, freshman reliever Paige Deschaine (1-5) hit a batter and walked a batter with the bases loaded to give YHC a 5-4 win.
Freshman Haley Birkle (2-5) went the distance in game two for two runs on two hits and earning three strikeouts. YHC scored in the first when Henry stole third and reached home on a throwing error on the catcher. The Jags evened it with one in the bottom of the first when Yeargan RBI-singled to left field.
In the fourth the Mountain Lions pulled ahead when Stacia Williams homered to left field, but ASU rallied in its half of the fourth for a comeback win. Freshman Kristen Bagley hit a leadoff single and Brown walked to bring in a new YHC pitcher, Katie-Jo Gentry.
Hannah Vaughn welcomed Gentry with an RBI-blast through the left side. A Molly Walton sac fly gave ASU a 4-2 lead, with the Jags holding on for a final score.
Bagley went 3-for-6 with two runs and Walton was 3-for-7 with two runs and an RBI. Yeargan was 2-for-7 with two RBIs, while Brooke Stephens, Katelyn Rush and Brown all had one hit on the day.
