Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State fell in game one to Carson-Newman 12-7, but took an early lead in game two and never let go for a 5-3 win Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader at Jaguar Field.
ASU (11-18) freshman Kristen Mills (6-1) gave up a homerun on her first pitch of game one to Kelli Hensley and the Eagles (20-9) plated another in the first inning off an RBI-single to left field. Mills pitched 4.0 innings for seven runs (six earned) on seven hits, before righty Paige Deschaine relieved in 3.0 innings for five runs (four earned) on three hits.
Hannah Vaughn and Lauren Yeargan earned walks in the first inning and Brooke Stephens RBI-singled to center to make it a one-run affair. The Eagles homered again in the third from cleanup hitter Brittany Hefner to take a 3-1 lead. The Jags loaded the bases in the third and Erika Burkhart singled for a run and Brooke Stephens' squeeze bunt scored Molly Walton to tie the game. Katelyn Rush plated two with her single for the Jags' first the lead of the day, 5-3.
CNC took a 7-5 lead on a left-center homer to take Mills out of the game and bring in Deschaine to pitch. The Eagles' Brittany Hefner hit her second homer of the day, this one a grand slam, to go up 11-5. ASU added two in the sixth, but the Eagles took game one 12-7 behind starter Kaitie Sims (12-1). Sims went 7.0 for seven runs (five earned) on seven hits.
Macy Terry singled in the second inning to spark ASU's offense in game two and Kristen Bagley RBI doubled for an early 1-0 lead. Senior Laura Brown tripled to bring in Bagley and Terry's double in the third scored Burkhart from first as the Jags cruised to a 3-0 lead.
ASU starter Haley Birkle (4-9) made it through the third unscathed, before CNC plated their first in the fourth. Birkle went 7.0 innings for eight hits and three unearned runs.
Bagley hit a bomb over the left-field wall to start the fourth for a 4-1 lead. CNC gave the Jags a run when a wild pitch scored Walton from third for 5-1 lead. The Eagles scored two unearned runs in the seventh after an infield error and past ball brought it to 5-3, but Birkle earned a groundball to win the game.
Vaughn was 2-for-4 in game two, while Brown, Terry and Bagley all went 2-for-3 with Bagley scoring two runs and driving in two RBIs.
ASU hosts West Georgia in non-conference doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. on Jaguar Field on Sunday, March 24.
