Box Score 2 DUE WEST, S.C. – Augusta State dropped two non-conference games on the road to the Erskine Flying Fleet Thursday afternoon 7-4 and 8-6 in Due West, S.C.
The Flying Fleet (8-11-1) built on a walk and double in the first inning of game one to take a 3-0 lead off an RBI-single and ASU (12-20) infield error. The Jaguars answered with one in the second when Hannah Vaughn ripped a single to score starting pitcher Kristen Mills. Mills (6-2) went 6.0 innings for the Jaguars for seven runs (six earned) on eight hits.
In the second, Erskine's Ericka McCarson knocked a two-run homer for a 5-1 advantage. ASU answered with a Macy Terry RBI-single in the fifth that scored Molly Walton after she walked to lead off the inning. Three doubles from the Flying Fleet scored two more, but Terry wasn't done for the Jags. Lauren Yeargan reached on a fielder's choice in the seventh and Terry homered to make it a 7-4 game, but Erskine starter Kelsey Spurrier (7-6) ended it to earn a pop up. Spurrier went 7.0 allowing seven hits for four runs (three earned) and striking out four.
A walk loaded the bases for Erskine in the first inning of game two. Ashlyn Hicks reached on a fielder's choice with a run scoring on an ASU error. Colleen Gardner hit a three-RBI double, leading to a 5-0 Erskine start.
Nichole Lyday led off for ASU with a single and Haley Birkle walked to load the bases for Laura Brown. Brown's RBI sac fly scored Erika Burkhart to get one run back. With two outs, ASU scored two more when Vaughn doubled and Walton singled for two RBIs, but Erskine tacked on three more for an 8-6 final score.
ASU starter Haley Birkle (4-9) went 6.0 innings for nine hits to score eight runs (two earned), as four Jags errors were capitalized upon.
Terry went 4-for-8 on the day with four RBIs, while Yeargan went 2-for-3 and Walton 2-for-4 in game two. Lyday went 2-for-3 as well in the defeat.
ASU hosts West Georgia in a non-conference doubleheader at Jaguar Field at 2:00 p.m. this Sunday, March 24.
