Diamond Jags Sweep West Georgia

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State swept a pair of non-conference games over the West Georgia Wolves Wednesday afternoon at Jaguar Field.

ASU (13-20) starter Haley Birkle grooved a strike for her first pitch of game one and retired the side in the first inning. UWG loaded the bases in the top of the second, but Birkle got out of it with an infield pop fly. Scoreless into the third, ASU's Molly Walton drew a throw to second base with a steal that scored Hannah Vaughn after the shortstop misplayed the ball. Up 1-0, ASU spread its lead with Laura Brown's RBI-double to plate Kristen Bagley from first. Hannah Vaughn lined a single down the right-field line for a 3-0 lead.

The Wolves loaded the bases on an infield single and Laurel Clark's RBI-single through the right side plated Nicole Yancey for their first score of the day. Monica Mills hit a two-run double to left to tie the game at 3-all. Kaleigh McNair (1-1) took the mound for ASU in the seventh to earn the win in 0.2 innings. Vaughn doubled to put the winning run on second and Walton ripped a single to bring her home for a 4-3 ASU walk-off win.

Katie Shultes (6-11) took the loss in 6.1 innings for the Wolves, surrendering four runs (three earned) on seven hits a dealing five strikeouts.

UWG led 1-0 after the first inning of game two, when a passed ball scored the leadoff hitter from third. Bases loaded in the first, Kristen Mills hit a run-producing fielder's choice to knot the game at 1-all. In the bottom of the second, Katelyn Rush reached home on a UWG infield error for a one-run lead. The Wolves evened it again on a double from Clark and took the lead on an ASU error in left field.

Mills (7-2) pitched 7.0 innings for ASU in the win, surrendering three runs (one earned) on seven hits and striking out three.

Yeargan led off the fifth with a single and Macy Terry moved her with a bunt single to bring up Mills. Mills scored a run with a single down the left-field line and Brooke Stephens took a 4-3 lead with a single through the left side. Rush hit a sac fly to plate Mills for a three run fifth inning and 5-3 final score.

Vaughn went 2-for-2 in game one with two runs and an RBI, while Walton combined both games for a 4-for-7 seven day with an RBI. Stephens went 2-for-3 with an RBI in game two and Bagley was 2-for 3 with a run in game one.

ASU plays at Columbus State this Friday, March 29th for a 3:00 p.m. PBC doubleheader.
