Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State recovered from a 2-1 loss to the Wingate University Bulldogs Monday afternoon to win game two of the doubleheader 3-0 at Jaguar Field.
ASU (5-13) freshman lefty Haley Birkle (1-7) went the distance in game one (14-7-1) in 7.0 innings to strike out four and give up two runs on five hits. She got into trouble in the third when she walked her first two batters and gave up two RBIs on a pop fly that fell for a single to right field – 3-0 Wingate.
In the fourth ASU freshman Kristen Bagley lined one to center field to load the bases, after junior Macy Terry and sophomore Brooke Stephens reached on singles. Senior Laura Brown belted one to right field to drive in pinch-runner Erika Burkhart.
Birkle stranded Wingate's runners on second and third in the top of the seventh to keep a comeback realistic, but two ASU lineouts and a groundball to the right side ended game one with Wingate on top. WU's Stacey Houser (7-3) went 7.0 innings, giving up seven hits for one earned run and striking out five.
Terry gave ASU a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two on a sacrifice fly to the right fielder. The Jags tallied one more in the third after a walk and bunt single put two runners on. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and senior Lauren Yeargan hit into a run-producing fielder's choice to score Vaughn.
Freshman right-hander Kristen Mills went 6.0 innings, before junior Kaleigh McNair and Birkle came in for relief – with Birkle gaining a save.
A single from Bagley and two errors from Wingate's infield resulted in an unearned run and the final score of the game.
Yeargan, who leads the team in batting average, went 3-for-6 with an RBI on the day and Bagley was 3-for-5 with a run overall. Stephens went 3-for-5 combined, while Vaughn was 1-for-2 in game two with two runs.
