Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta State split a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon with Catawba at Jaguar Field.
In game one, Catawba's Carly Tysinger struck out seven and allowed only a pair of hits while going the full 7.0 innings for a 3-1 victory.
The Indians grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning and added two more in the fourth. The Jags' lone run came on an RBI-double in the fourth from Macy Terry.
ASU freshman lefty Haley Birkle yielded only four hits in 7.0 innings with one strikeout and a pair of walks. No player for either team had more than one hit.
In game two, the Jags pounced on Catawba starter Emily B. Huneycutt for three first-inning runs and claimed a 9-5 victory.
ASU sophomore Brooke Stephens drove in a run on an infield single. Lauren Yeargan then stole home and a Erika Burkhart two-out single plated Stephens for a 3-0 lead. Huneycutt couldn't escape the first inning and Indians' reliever Tysinger didn't fare much better.
Jags' senior Laura Brown led off the second with a single to left and stole second. Senior Lauren Yeargan then slapped a double to chase home Brown before Terry launched a 3-run homer to left and force the Indians' second pitching change in as many innings.
ASU sophomore Molly Walton knocked a solo homer to right in the sixth and Catawba got two mammoth home runs from Emily D. Huneycutt, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI.
Brown paced the Jags with a 3-for-3 effort and Yeargan, Stephens, Terry and Kristen Bagley each had two hits. Terry drove in four runs and four other players each managed an RBI.
ASU hosts North Georgia on Saturday, March 9 at 1:00 p.m., at Jaguar Field.
