Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State registered a split Saturday afternoon with perennial Peach Belt Conference power North Georgia at Jaguar Field.
The Jaguars (7-15, 1-1 PBC) received a strong pitching effort in game one from starter Kristen Mills (3-0). The freshman hurler limited the Saints to just two hits while striking out seven in 7.0 innings. The shutout was the second for her in just her sixth start this season.
ASU scored all three runs in the first when Hannah Vaughn singled up the middle to lead off the inning and Molly Walton, Lauren Yeargan and Brooke Stephens reached on three consecutive infield singles. In fact, the four hits proved to be all the production the Jags' offense mustered in the opener.
Mills didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning. The Saints' other hit came on a leadoff single in the sixth.
Sophomore catcher Brooke Stephens logged two RBI for the Jags and Yeargan drove in the other run.
North Georgia (19-6, 1-1 PBC) rebounded with nine hits in game two en route to a 6-1 victory. Kim McMillan went 2-for-3 for UNG with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Sarah Johnson went 2-for-4 and five different Saints collected an RBI.
Yeargan, Kristen Bagley and Laura Brown tallied the only hits for ASU.
North Georgia starter Melissa Dickie went the distance, posting three strikeouts and a walk in 7.0 innings. ASU freshman starter Haley Birkle (1-6) took the loss, yielding nine hits and six runs -- five earned – in 7.0 innings.
The Jags are right back in action on Sunday at Jaguar Field when they host PBC newcomer Young Harris in a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m.
