Box Score 2 SAVANNAH, Ga. – Augusta State's Lauren Yeargan homered in the seventh inning of game two to cut it to a one run game, but Armstrong Atlantic held on and completed a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep Sunday afternoon on the Armstrong Softball Field.
ASU (18-32, 7-15 PBC) teased a comeback in the top of the seventh inning of game one when Lauren Yeargan blasted a three-run homerun to right field – scoring Hannah Vaughn and Brooke Stephens. Starting pitcher's Kristen Mills (ASU) and Megan Barnwell (AASU) pitched a scoreless game into the sixth inning. The Pirates (33-6-1, 16-4) plated four off a two-run homer to left field from Alexis Mercer and back-to-back singles for an early 4-0 lead.
Mills (8-7) got the loss in 5.1 innings, allowing four hits for three runs. Haley Birkle relieved Mills midway through the sixth to give up one run on two hits. After Yeargan's homer, Barnwell (21-3) composed herself and threw a strikeout to get out of the inning on top. Barnwell tossed a complete game, giving up eight hits for three runs and dealing four strikeouts with three walks.
Armstrong jumped to a 3-0 lead in the third inning of game two off five hits. Shelby Duff hit a sacrifice fly to center field in the sixth for one more run to take the second meeting 4-0. Vaughn (1-for-3) and Stephens (1-for-4) had the only hits for ASU in game two, while Duff, Andrea Dalton, and Haley Ellis all went 2-for-3 for AASU.
Rachel Reynolds (3-0) threw 7.0 innings in the win, limiting ASU to two hits in the shutout and dealing 12 strikeouts. Haley Birkle (5-13) took the Jags' loss in 6.0 innings, surrendering nine hits for four runs.
