ASU Snags Two Over Newberry

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State took both non-conference games Wednesday afternoon over Newberry 9-6 in extra innings and 4-2 in the second meeting on Jaguar Field.

Jaguar (16-24) senior Lauren Yeargan went 2-for-3 with two homeruns and five RBIs in game two. Her second bomb tied the game at 6-all in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings and in the eighth, Brooke Stephens ripped a walk-off homer to left center-field for a 9-6 victory.

Newberry's (15-19) Millie Putnam reached on a fielder's choice to the right side in the third to score one for an early lead. In the bottom of the second, Jags senior Laura Brown knocked an RBI-double off the left-field wall for a 1-all tie. The Wolves added five in the third off four singles and two ASU infield errors. ASU starter Haley Birkle gave up three runs before Kaleigh McNair relieved her midway through the third. Birkle lasted 2.2 innings, surrendering five hits for six runs (three earned) and dealing two strikeouts, while McNair (2-1) got the win in 5.1 innings, giving up two hits and dealing one strikeout.

Senior Lauren Yeargan hit a line drive three-run homerun in the fifth to bring it to 6-4, before she knocked her second to left field to force an eighth inning. Stephens' homer gave the Jags a 9-6 advantage to end game one. Newberry's Hannah Blakley got the loss in relief for Kaylyn Camacho, in 0.1 innings, to give up two hits for three runs.

In game two Laura Brown RBI-singled in the second inning and Hannah Vaughn placed a sacrifice bunt for another run, before Walton lined a two-run hit over the left fielder's head to put ASU on top 4-0 in the second. Newberry scratched back for two runs in the fourth, but ASU held on for the sweep.

Brittany Phillips put the Wolves on the board with a two-run homer to left center off ASU starter Kristen Mills. Mills (8-4) went 7.0 innings for the win, allowing seven hits for two runs, while Shelley Jeffcoat (8-8) took the loss in 6.0 innings for Newberry, surrendering four runs on seven hits.

ASU hosts rival USC Aiken in a Peach Belt Conference series Friday, April 5 on Jaguar Field at 2:00 p.m.
