AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State battled back to steal game one against Lander, but dropped the second meeting on Jaguar Field 1-0 with only one hit Saturday afternoon in the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.

Lander's (18-27, 6-14 PBC) Taylor Donson leadoff the day with a double and took third on the throw. Brittany Sheriff hit a sacrifice to left field for a 1-0 lead off ASU (18-26, 7-9) starter Haley Birkle. Birkle (6-12) threw a complete game, allowing six hits for one run and striking out two.

Amanda Hamby (1-4) held a one-hitter into the fourth, only allowing a bunt single to Hannah Vaughn, before Macy Terry singled to left field to start the fourth. The Bearcats loaded the bases on Sheriff's walk in the fifth. Birkle got two infield fly balls to leave the bases full and escape the inning.

In the fifth, Brooke Stephens doubled to start the inning and Laura Brown's sac bunt put her on third. Hannah Vaughn repeated Stephens' hit with an RBI-double to tie the game 1-1. Molly Walton reached on a fielder's choice and Lauren Yeargan's run-producing fielder's choice gave the Jags the lead and a final score. Hamby went 6.0 innings, surrendering one run on six hits in the loss.

Chasity Davis RBI-doubled in the first inning of game two for the early Bearcats' lead, off ASU righty Kristen Mills. A walk loaded the bases for ASU in the first inning, but the Jags were unable to capitalize. Mary Katherine Pegram (5-9) held the Jags scoreless and stranded seven ASU runners in her one-hitter in 7.0 innings pitched – striking out four.

Mills (8-5) threw 7.0 innings, allowing five hits for one run and dealing four strikeouts. Yeargan had the lone hit in game two, going 1-for-2 and in game one Vaughn went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI, Terry was 1-for-3 and Stephens went 1-for-2 with a run.

ASU plays at Flagler on Tuesday, April 9 for PBC doubleheader at 5:30 p.m., kicking off three conference road series to end the regular season.
