Jaguars Remain Undefeated In 74-64 Win At Shaw

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. – The GRU Augusta men's basketball team were outrebounded and outscored at the free-throw line, but the Jaguars withstood the Shaw Bears on the road to win a 74-64 non-conference game Saturday afternoon in the CC Spaulding Gymasium.

The Jaguars (5-0) stayed undefeated as senior Devonte Thomas scored his season-high 17 points and sophomore Keith Crump matched his season-high with 13 points against the Shaw Bears (2-3).

Freshman Vlad Cobzaru started off the day with two made free throws and a jump shot to give the Jags a two-basket lead. Shaw's John Savoy put the Bears on the board for the first time with a made free throw and eventually tipped in a missed Shaw shot to even the game at six-all.

GRU got some perimeter work from Keith Crump and Devonte Thomas in the first half - with each sinking three pointers for a 12-8 lead at the 15:03 mark, but the Bears fought back and got to the free-throw line to tie the contest at 12 and 15. Another Savoy layup sparked an 8-0 Shaw run, giving them their first and largest lead of the game.

GRU point guards D'Angelo Boyce and Keshun Sherrill continued to find Crump, who drained back-to-back three balls for a 25-all score with 3:50 remaining in the opening half. Crump had three treys on the day.

Savoy knocked down two more Shaw free throws to give the Bears a slight lead that was spoiled by Jaguar senior Devon Wright-Nelson's three-point play – giving GRU a one-point advantage with the clocking expiring. Shaw stayed persistent of the charity stripe and knocked down more free throws to give them a 33-32 lead at the break.

Crump hit three from beyond arc in the first half as the Jags hit 5-of-10 three pointers, while Shaw was 0-for-4. The Bears however, hit 21 free throws to GRU's three in the first 20 minutes and outrebounded the Jags 21-to-8.

Shaw's Jamar Cooper and GRU's Keshun Sherrill traded baskets to begin the second half, but the Jags held the lead for five minutes. With 11:37 on the clock, Ali Baba Odd nailed a game-tying three pointer to make it 41-all. Sherrill responded with a three and jumper to keep GRU ahead and under 10 minutes to play, Henry McCarthy gave more life with two tip-in baskets. Odd cut it back to a one-point game with two free throws, but he committed a foul on Boyce which resulted in two Jaguar points at the charity stripe.

Devonte Thomas lifted the Jags to a five-point lead with two more three pointers as GRU slowly increased the advantage – forcing Shaw to put the Jags on the free-throw line. GRU held off the Bears for a 74-64 win, shooting 46.3 percent from the field to Shaw's 36.6 percent. Shaw dominated the paint at the charity stripe for the game, winning the rebound contest 41-25 and scoring 33 points on free throws to GRU's 15.

Last time out against Shaw on Nov. 23, 2014, GRU Augusta outscored Shaw 23-12 over the final 9:10 and registered a 74-69 non-conference road win Saturday afternoon in the Spaulding Gymnasium.

The Jags play another non-conference match tomorrow against Mount Olive for a 4:00 p.m. tipoff in Mount Olive, N.C.
