Jags Split Home Opener With Erskine

AUGUSTA, Ga. –The GRU Augusta Jaguars split their home opener with non-conference Erskine on Tuesday afternoon, dropping game one 1-0 in extra innings before taking the second meeting 3-0 over the Flying Fleet at Jaguar Field.

GRU (4-8) sophomore Paige Deschaine started on the mound in the home opener against the Flying Fleet to strand three runners on base after her first two innings to keep a no-score game intact. Deschaine pitched a no-hitter until the top of the sixth when Erskine got their first on a single down the left field line. The Fleet had runners on second and third in the sixth, But Deschaine got out of the inning with a groundball.

Jags junior Hannah Vaughn led off GRU's sixth with a deep double to left field, but the Jags were unable to capitalize as both teams took a no-score game into the seventh. Erskine went three up-three down in the seventh with Vaughn recording all three outs at third base.

Neither team managed to plate a run in regulation, leading to a scoreless game into the 10th inning when the Fleet's Whitney Brown laid down a squeeze-bunt to score Jacquie Hill for a 1-0 lead. Erskine starting pitcher Danica Newton closed out the Jags in the bottom of the inning to seal the win. Newton tossed 10.0 innings, to allow seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Deschaine recorded her season-high with 13 strikeouts, only allowing three hits for one run in the loss. Molly Walton lead GRU with a  2-for-5 game one, while Vaughn, Ashley Benton, Mallory Ferguson, Kristen Bagley, and Julia Banks all posted one hit.

The Jags jumped on the Fleet in the bottom of the first of game two when Vaughn scored Rozier after she reached on a fielder's choice and Ferguson ripped a single through the left side for a 2-0 lead. GRU game-two starter Haley Birkle recorded four strikeouts in her first two innings, striking out the side in the second to keep her team up 2-0.

Vaughn hit a double over the left fielder's head to score Ashley Benton from first for a 3-0 GRU advantage going into the sixth. Birkle lost her perfect game in the top of the sixth off a bunt single, but earned a strikeout and groundball to escape the inning unscathed. Birkle (2-3) got the complete-game win after closing out the seventh. Birkle tossed 7.0 innings, allowing one hit while dealing eight strikeouts.

Kaylin White took the loss in 5.0 innings allowing seven hits for three runs (one earned) before Katherine Mulzer relieved. Ferguson went 2-for-3 for the Jags and Vaughn was 1-for-3 with two RBI. The Diamond Jags compete in their second tournament of the year at the Catawba Tournament in Salisbury, N.C., Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22, starting with a single game on Friday against Davis & Elkins at 1:00 p.m.
