Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguars were outhit 13-to-7 in the 11-2 Peach Belt Conference loss to the Columbus State Cougars at Lake Olmstead Stadium Friday night.
Underneath the lights for their first Friday start of 2014, the Jaguars (5-8, 1-3) committed four errors and let Columbus State (7-6, 3-1) take a 3-0 lead by the second inning off GRU Augusta starter Kip Custer. Custer (2-2) allowed 10 hits for eight runs (six earned) in his 6.0 innings pitched. He dealt four strikeouts before Bryson Stack relieved in 0.2 innings to give up two hits for three runs (two earned).
The Jags were behind during the game until the bottom of the fourth inning when Ryan Khan was able to hit a sacrifice fly to score Jeff Rice. Bradley Dennis followed with another sac fly to plate Boose for the Jags only two runs of the game. GRU pulled off a double play which caused a swift end to the third inning for the Cougars, but a big seventh inning scored four more Cougar runs.
Columbus State hit a homerun from Dustin Averett during the fifth inning that scored two after an infield error put a man on base. The Jaguars were able to stop the Cougars from gaining any more of lead in the bottom of the ninth when the outfielders assisted in three consecutive outs while Dalton Reed closed out the inning. The Cougars held off GRU for the 11-2 final.
GRU complete their Peach Belt Conference series this Saturday, Feb. 22 with a doubleheader against Columbus State at Lake Olmstead Stadium, starting with a 1:30 p.m. game.
