Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguars improved to 7-9 on the year with three wins in four games at the Catawba Tournament in Salisbury, N.C. this past weekend in non-conference action.
Opening play on Friday afternoon, the Jaguars took care of Davis & Elkins with an 8-1 win. Sophomore lefty Haley Birkle tossed eight strikeouts in the win before GRU Augusta dropped a close game two on Friday to tournament hosts Catawba in a 2-1 battle. Jaguar junior Hannah Vaughn produced the lone run for GRU when she a hit a leadoff home run in the fifth inning. GRU's Paige Deschaine tossed 7.2 innings and took the loss after Catawba scored the go-ahead runner in the eighth for the walk off victory.
The Jags responded in day two of the tourney to beat Lenoir-Rhyne 4-1 and Pfeiffer 1-0. In GRU's game four of the tourney and their second on Saturday, Vaughn hit a single against Pfeiffer and advanced to second on a fielder's choice.
Erin Rozier ripped an RBI-single to center to plate Vaughn for the only run of the game where the Jags would hold on behind game four starter Haley Birkle. Birkle recorded 7.0 innings of work to give up four hits with three strikeouts.
The Jaguars play at Anderson on Tuesday, Feb. 25 for a non-conference doubleheader at 2:00 p.m.
