Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – GRU Augusta freshman Mallory Ferguson broke open Catawba starting pitcher Carley Tysinger's no-hitter in the fifth inning, but 13 Tysinger strikeouts helped give the Indians a 4-0 non-conference win over the Jaguars in the opening day of play at the Mid-South Classic at Tiger River Park.
Catawba (9-1) drew a walk, singled, and knocked a homerun off GRU starter Paige Deschaine for a quick 3-0 advantage after the first inning. The Jags (7-12) were hitless until Ferguson's single in the fifth, but were unable to conjure any consistent offense against Tysinger.
Junior Hannah Vaughn came up with a leadoff single to left center to get the sixth inning going and junior Molly Walton laid down a bunt single to move the runners. Walton's bunt was the third and final Jaguar hit as Tysinger escaped the inning with a strikeout and went on to record 13 for Catawba to take a 4-0 game over the GRU.
Tysinger (6-0) only allowed three hits and got a complete- game win in 7.0 innings, while Deschaine (3-7) allowed five hits for four runs and recorded five strikeouts in her seventh loss.
Day two of the Mid-South Classic continues tomorrow when the Jaguars play Bellarmine at 10:00 a.m. and Mount Olive at 2:00 p.m.
