AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguars split a non-conference doubleheader at Newberry Wednesday afternoon, winning the first game 8-1 before dropping a 5-0 meeting.
GRU Augusta only had one strikeout in game one as they outhit the Wolves 9-to-3 and capitalized on three errors. Juniors Hannah Vaughn and Brooke Stephens posted 3-for-4 days with two RBI while freshman Brianna Dickens went 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The Jags opened the day at Newberry with a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one and blew it open with four in the fourth highlighted by Vaughn's triple to score junior Molly Walton. The Jags tacked on one more in the seventh before Newberry plated their first. Sophomore righty Paige Deschaine (1-1) tossed 6.1 innings with seven strikeouts and two hits for one run in her first win of the year.
The Wolves responded with a 5-0 shutout win in game two, using two back-to-back innings to build a 4-0 lead. GRU had one extra-base hit off Brittany Middleton (2-0) who threw 7.0 scoreless innings and allowed three hits. She struck out zero, but got 13 groundballs in her second win.
Hailey Drawe went 3-for-3 with two homers for the Wolves while Walton and Casey Rowland each had a hit for the Jags.
The Jaguars open play in the Charger Chillout on Friday, Feb. 7 against Southern Indiana at 10:00 a.m. and against Union (Tenn.) at 12:00 p.m. The three-day tournament in Huntsville, Ala., will see the Jags face teams from all over the nation.
