CARROLTON, Ga. - The Diamond Jaguars won their second consecutive game with a 4-1 victory over West Georgia before they fell 13-4 in game two to the Wolves in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon on Cole Field.
GRU Augusta (2-3) senior Kip Custer got the game one win in 6.2 innings to record three strikeouts and allow five hits for one run. The Jaguars put up their four in the first inning off of five hits. Freshman Tyler Roberts commenced the fun with a single to right field and a Jeff Rice double and Connor Gilbert walk loaded the bases for Hunter Boose who doubled for two runs. Senior Ryan Khan singled to plate Gilbert and Bradley Dennis' rope down the right-field line scored Boose for a 4-0 lead.
The Wolves got one off Custer in the bottom of the first, but a quiet eight innings gave the Jags the 4-1 final. Senior slinger Clint Echols (1-0) earned the save, relieving in 1.0 innings to get a strikeout after Jamie Suggs pitched 1.1 innings. Cody Skinner drew the loss in 9.0 innings pitched, allowing eight hits for four runs and dealing five strikeouts.
Despite another productive first inning for the Jags game two where they scored two and another in the second, the Wolves blew it open off GRU starter David Bermudez. UWG scored two in the second and eight in the third before adding one run in the fourth, fifth, and seventh to win a 13-4 game two.
The Jags bullpen threw six pitchers. Bermudez (0-2) got the loss in 2.1 innings, allowing five hits for five runs (four earned) before Scott Shipman, Mitchell Szwec, Bryson Stack, CJ Reed, and Tyler Grooms relieved. Colton Duttweiler (1-0) took the win for the Wolves in 6.0 innings, slowing seven hits and giving up four runs (one earned).
Rice went 4-for-8 on the day while Roberts produced a 3-for-7 performance with three runs and an RBI. Dennis went 2-for-3 with an RBI in game one. GRU wraps up the series at West Georgia tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. on Cole Field.
