Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguars tied game one in their last scheduled at bat to take the game to 11 innings where the fell 9-8 before outlasting the Flagler Saints in game 2-1 on Monday afternoon in the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Jaguar Field.
Lefty sophomore Haley Birkle dealt back-to-back strikeouts to end her first inning of work and was fine until the third inning when Lauren Bessent hit a three-run homer after two Flagler singles started the inning. In the fifth, the Saints got one run on two hits with Mackenie Conley driving in Darcey Cochran for a 4-0 lead.
Molly Whittington willed the Saints with a solo homer in the top of the sixth, while Flagler starting pitcher Kalyn Loverich kept the Jags scoreless into the sixth. Hannah Vaughn got GRU on the board with a single up the middle that scored Ashley Benton after she started the inning with a walk. Kristen Bagley loaded the bases on another single when the Saints brought in new pitcher Tinsley Smith. Smith gave up a bases-clearing double to Brooke Stephens for a 5-4 ballgame.
The Saints tacked on three more runs in their half of the seventh off four singles and a sac fly. In their last scheduled at bat, the Jags loaded the bases on three singles and Vaughn drew a walk to score the first run. Kristen Bagley and Casey Rowland each struck singles to knot the game at 7-all and force extra innings.
The Jags brought in Paige Deschaine to the mound to close out the seventh, but she gave up a solo homer to Christen Moon, the second Flagler long ball of game one to take a 8-7 lead. The home team produced in the ninth when Kristen Bagley doubled to plate Mallory Ferguson and re-tie the game at 8-all. After three quiet extra innings, Madalyn Murphy hit a solo homer to right field in the 11th to give Flagler a one-run advantage for the win.
Kalyn Loverich (12-9) got the win in in 10.0 innings, allowing nine hits for five runs while dealing four strikeouts. Deschaine (9-13) relieved Birkle in 3.1 innings to get the loss, despite recording seven strikeouts. Bagley had a 3-for-5 day with two RBI and Ferguson went 2-for-4 with two runs.
Deschaine recomposed herself and made the game two start for GRU. Her offense gave her a lead to work with after Hannah Vaughn ripped a double down the left-field line to score Ashley Benton for a quick 1-0 lead. The Jags got Benton to third in the third inning, but Melanie Oliver made a layout catch in the left-center gap to preserve a one run game.
Bagley started the Jags' fourth inning with a single and Macy Terry brought her home with a fielder's choice to the right side for a 2-0 lead that the Jags held onto for the win. Deschaine had the Flagler bats quiet all game until their last at bat when an RBI-single made it a one-run affair, but she closed it out with a looking strikeout.
The Jaguars host Georgia College this Wednesday, March 2nd for a PBC doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. on Jaguar Field. The series starts a stint of three consecutive league series at home for GRU Augusta, starting with GC and followed by Columbus State on April 5th and Georgia Southwestern on April 6th for Senior Day 2014
