Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguars used two great starts on the mound from sophomores Paige Deschaine and Haley Birkle to take two from Mount Olive in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Jaguar Field.
Jaguar (11-14) sophomore Paige Deschaine, who recorded 13 strikeouts in her last outing against Mount Olive on March 1, had a no-hitter going against the Trojans (9-16) for the majority of game one until a seventh-inning leadoff single broke it up. Deschaine (5-7) got a strikeout and groundball to get out of the inning safe and with the win. Deschaine recorded nine strikeouts and gave up one hit in 7.0 innings of work.
For the Jags' offense, freshman Mallory Ferguson knocked a leadoff single through the left side in the fourth inning of game one. Brooke Stephens reached on an error and took second, while Ferguson moved to third to bring up Hannah Vaughn. Vaughn's groundball to the right side was enough to plate Ferguson and Kristen Bagley's squeeze bunt, brought home Brooke Stephens who avoided the catcher's tag with a hook slide for the second Jaguar run.
Ferguson hit a leadoff single again in the sixth and Stephens, in the next at bat, blasted a two-run home run to centerfield for a 4-0 lead. Mount Olive brought in a new pitcher after the homer and the Jags tacked on one more to take a 5-0 final. Ferguson went 2-for-3 with two runs and Stephens was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs in game one.
The Trojans took a first-inning lead off GRU starter Haley Birkle, after Birkle walked the leadoff batter and three ground balls to the right side scored the first run of game two. The Jags got two on in the third on a single and walk from Brianna Dickens and Ashley Benton, but UMO starter Lauren Smith got out of the inning with an infield ground ball.
Down 1-0, the Jags came alive to take a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Erin Rozier drew a walk, Stephens took a hit-by-pitch, and Vaughn singled to load the bases. Bagley hit a deep fly ball that fell off the UMO left-fielder's glove to score two runs. The Trojans over threw first base in the next play which scored two more for GRU to steal a 4-1 lead.
In their next at bat, the Jags' Vaughn laid down a bunt with runners on second and third which scored two more. Rozier scored on the bunted ball and Stephens, along with Vaughn advanced on the throw for two runs. Macy Terry's RBI-double down the left-field line sored another for a 7-1 advantage. Rozier knocked a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to put the Jags up 9-1 for the run-rule win.
Rozier went 1-for-2 with two RBI and Brianna Dickens and Vaughn each had two hits in the game-two win. Birkle (5-6) got the win 6.0 innings, allowing zero hits and tossing four strikeouts.
The Jaguars play at Carson-Newman this Saturday, March 8 for a 12:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader in Jefferson City, Tenn.
