Jags Split With Lenoir-Rhyne

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Sophomore Paige Deschaine helped give the GRU Augusta Jaguars a 2-1 win off her 11 strikeouts in game one, before the Jags fell 7-0 in game two Sunday afternoon at Jaguar Field.

GRU (12-17) went with sophomore Paige Deschaine on the mound in game one. The righty dealt two strikeouts in her first inning of work against the Bears as she would end the game with 11. L-R (16-5) got their first base runner on in the second with a Sarah Kelley walk, but Deschaine fired a strikeout against Dakota Keller to end the inning.

L-R went ahead first on Haily Jarman's double, but GRU's Brooke Stephens struck an infield single and Hannah Vaughn reached on an error in the third to spark a comeback. Stephens and Vaughn advanced to second and third on a passed ball and Molly Walton hit a base-clearing, line-drive double to take a 2-1 lead.

The Jags left five runners on base by the top of the seventh, but Deschaine tossed two strikeouts to end the game and seal a 2-1 win. Deschaine (6-8) threw a one-hit complete game, allowing only one run while dealing 11 strikeouts. L-R's Maryann Hoskins took the loss in 6.0 innings, giving up two hits for two runs (one earned). Walton and Stephens each went 1-for-2 in game one, with Walton recording two RBI.

The Bears responded to their game-one loss with 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second meeting. Sydney Landreth walked and Jarman singled to right field, but a misplayed groundball scored Landreth for an unearned run and put Jarman on third. Jags game-two starter Haley Birkle got a looking strikeout to end the inning down 1-0, but the Bears were not done.

Neither team scored until the fifth inning when L-R's Ciera Cockerham doubled to left field and the Bears used Julia Wakefield as her pinch runner. It would pay off, as Wakefield scored on Landreth's opposite-field single to right field for a 2-0 advantage. Birkle gave up back-to-back singles in the sixth and a squeeze-bunt from Cockerham to give the Bears a 4-0 lead.

Still in the sixth with runners on second and third, the Bears got a three-run homer off the bat of Mizelle for a 7-0 lead that never let go. Birkle (5-8) got the loss in 5.1 innings of work before Julia Banks recorded 1.2 innings. The Jags play this Wednesday at Catawba for a non-conference doubleheader at 1:30 p.m.
