Jaguars Drop Twin Bill To Georgia College

AUGUSTA, Ga. – GRU Augusta (16-29, 3-9 PBC) trailed early to GC (29-11, 8-6 PBC) and left 15 runners on base in the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader for the Bobcats to take both games on Wednesday afternoon at Jaguar Field.

Haley Birkle (6-14) walked the two leadoff batters of game one and gave up an RBI-single through left side to Kristen Humphries. A groundball to the right side ended the inning and stranded two on base, but the Bobcats were back at it in the second when Whitney Oakvist plated Savannah Chapman with a single for a 2-0 lead.

GRU put on the squeeze bunt with runners on first and third for Casey Rowland to plate Ashley Benton for a 2-1 score. Birkle got two groundballs to second base and left two on base to end the Bobcats' third and fourth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Molly Walton lined a triple to left field, but GC starter Carly Lewis escaped the inning with a one-run lead to leave Walton on base.

GC loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh and scored one on a wild pitch to go up 3-1. Benton leadoff the Jags' last at bat with a single up the middle, but Lewis got a strikeout and groundball to end the game. Birkle got the loss in her complete game where she pitched 7.0 innings to allow five hits for three runs (two earned). Lewis (13-7) got the win in 7.0 innings, limiting the Jags to four hits for one run. Benton went 2-for-3 off Lewis and Walton and Terry each knocked a hit.

Abi LeRoy jumped on GRU in the first inning with a liner up the middle off GRU starter Paige Deschaine (9-14). A squeeze bunt in their next at bat gave the Bobcats another quick 2-0 lead. Marisa Boyette (10-4) was called for an illegal pitch in the bottom of the first that brought home Mallory Ferguson on third base, but GRU left the bases loaded to end the inning.

There was no score for the rest of the game until the top of the seventh, when the Bobcats got runners to second and third. Deschaine got two outs, but Danielle Bernstein lined one off the glove of Deschaine's glove for a 3-1 final. Lewis held off the Jags to get the win in 7.0 innings while took the loss.

The Jaguars host Columbus State this Saturday, April 5 th for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader at Jaguar Field. Join us on Saturday where fans will have the opportunity to help "Strike Out Cancer" by pledging a donation per strikeout for both teams combined. Upon the completion of the doubleheader, a combined total of strikeouts will be taken amongst each team. Proceeds will benefit the Georgia Regents University Cancer Center.

The team will pay special tribute to those who have battled breast cancer. Be sure to wear the color pink and come out to help support your Jaguars and their efforts to "Strike Out Cancer"!
