Jags' Rally Not Enough At No. 16 USC Aiken

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C. – A Jaguar rally in the fourth inning cut the rival contest to a run-one affair, but wasn't enough to outlast No. 16 USC Aiken as GRU Augusta fell 14-5 on Wednesday night in Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

After already playing a three-game series that counts toward conference play, the Jags squared of the Pacers in the 11th meeting of the Outback Cup – a meeting that does not count towards league play. The Pacers are now 10-1 in the meetings originally sponsored by Outback Steakhouse.

GRU Augusta (17-30) went down to the Pacers (32-13) after a big five-run first inning. Jags starter David Bermudez gave up a two-out single before Ty Barkell belted a homer to left field. Ryan Metzler continued the two-out rally with a double and reached third on a wild pitch. Matt Bosse hit the second USCA home run in the first inning after another single for the 5-0 early advantage.

Bermudez (1-4) held the Pacers quiet in the second and part of the third when lefty senior Kip Custer relieved the sophomore right hander. Bermudez struck out three in his 2.1 innings and allowed five hits for five runs in the loss. USCA's Nick Yobbi retired the side in order in the second and third innings, but ran into an awakened Jaguar offense in the fourth. Jason Eller's Jags cut the game to a one-run contest with leadoff-man JD Sabo starting the fun with a single to center field. Connor Gilbert reached on an error off the second baseman and a wild pitch advanced both Jags.

Jeff Rice ripped an RBI single to score Sabo and after Hunter Boose went down swinging, Ryan Khan pulled a shot down the left-field line that plated two. Zach Murray scored two more with a single to left, but got thrown out trying to reach second base to end the inning. The GRU bullpen went to Will Robertson in the bottom of the inning. He sat down three on strikeouts, but surrendered four runs (two earned) on three hits in 2.0 innings of action.

Down 9-4 in the seventh, the Jags scored one on a wild pitch but couldn't produce anymore as the Pacers tacked on three in the eighth and two in the ninth for an eventual 14-5 final. The Pacers used five arms out of the pen' while Yobbi (3-1) got the win after her threw 5.0 innings to start the game. For GRU, Frank Warren, Tristan Jones, Dalton Reed, and Jamie Suggs all saw action.

Sabo went for 3-for-4 with a walk, Murray was 1-for-2 with two RBI and Khan and Rice each went 1-for-4 with an RBI. The Jags play their final series of the season in a three-game Peach Belt Conference series at UNC Pembroke April 25-27. A Friday night single game kicks off the action at 7:00 p.m. before single games on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. conclude regular-season play.
